Apart from running multiple real world businesses I’ve worked with MBA courses and professors at business schools,, I’m going to overview some of the different types of courses that are available and then show you what you should look out for.

I’ll also explain some of the tricks and traps you should avoid. You’ll quickly see what you should be doing.

What’s available?

The two most popular online business courses generally come in two flavors. Downloads and drip drip sessions. here are some of the traps that people get stuck in.

The download is where you pay money and literally download a file (usually pdf). That’s it. Our point of view here is that you’re better off getting a book out of the library than paying for these downloads. it will save you lots of money and probably be just as good. Don’t beleiev promises of instant riches either.

The drip drip sessions can be equally problematic. You pay for part one and realize that you need 16 parts and soon discover that most of the valuable information is, guess what….. at the end.

if you’re going down the the sessions approach make sure that your payment gets you everything and there are no additional charges.

What should you do?

Business online classes at top business schools feature a well thought through course that are overseen by experts who are available for you. people spend up to four years and sometimes, a hundred thousand dollars to attend the top schools. But note the two key elements – a well thought through course and coaching.

The problem with business school is that it’s really expensive and takes years of work.

This is what you should look for in business online classes.

1. Clear fees with no hidden extras. Avoid, at all cost, sites that start charging for stuff that should have been in the package that you originally paid for. It’s like buying an airline ticket and then being charged extra for food, baggage… whoops they already do that :-) You know what I mean!
2. A step by step easy to follow approach that lets you work at your pace. You probably have a job today and are looking at setting up your new business in your spare time. You may me a mother with kids. You can’t spend 40 hours a week on this at the moment. The system needs to understand this and be flexible.
3. Coaches who have real experience – not people who were losers with no experience and suddenly discovered a miracle solution. For example, we have had senior positions at household name companies and now run multiple business ourselves. We’ve stood in your shoes.
4. Coaches who are available when you need them. You’re going to have moments when you’re confused and unsure. We want you to be successful and actually really enjoy helping people and hearing about their wonderful ideas.

You’re thinking of starting your own business and you may have seen some of the unbelievable get rich quick ideas out there. You’re right to be suspicious.

So here’s 6 hints to help you spot that scam.

1) Too good to be true

If the offer seems too good to be true, it usually is. Beware of sites promising schemes that create incomes of millions of dollars, instant earnings, no work required, etc. etc. You know yourself that you rarely get something for nothing. You know that running a business requires some work and that it’s unlikely that checks are simply going to float down out of the sky on the first days. If someone tells you that they earn hundreds of thousands of dollars every month and you can do the same…..

2) Guaranteed success

“Even if you know nothing and do nothing we guarantee you’ll succeed with our…”. Yeah, it’s ridiculous. If anyone guarantees your success be careful. We guarantee we’ll do our very best to help you become successful. But if you do nothing at all…. Sorry, you’ll fail. And do you know what? You deserve no more. So if you want to get rich quick through doing nothing, you’ve come to the wrong place. Sorry.

3) Money back guarantees

The better on line sites will offer you guarantees of money back. So for example, you should look for 30 day (60 day is even better) guarantee periods. You can then get a refund at any time during that period

4) Support

Scammers rarely offer support and almost never get back to you even if they provide a bogus email address. Test them out and send an email and see what happens.

5) Testimonials

Mystery people who are all earning thousands of dollars a day and worshipping at the alter of the scammer. The new FTC rules have forced people to be more careful but nonetheless, there’s still a grey area. Use your common sense.

6) Unsolicited emails

If you receive an email with an attached file that you did not ask for – be careful. The better sites don’t send unsolicited emails, let alone files. You should be asked to approve your addition to an email list.

And finally…

We’re some times amazed at sites that are getting people to buy their products when they are so obviously a scam being run buy people with zero experience. So be careful and check things out. See if the service / product really meets your need.
