I remember sitting at my desk, talking with friends and knowing I wanted to start my own business. I wanted to earn more, have fun and work less. I was frustrated with others reaping the rewards of my success. I was making millions – but for other people.
I just didn’t know how to start.
I’m almost embarrassed to say that It took me months before I finally took action. Now, Angelique and I have started 5 successful businesses. Here’s what I learned about taking those first steps.
You’re probably like I was. You’ve made lists, read web sites, grabbed armfuls of books from the library. You know there are hundreds of things to do but you’re not sure where to start.
Once you’ve done it a few times you just know what to do.
So here’s 5 steps that successful business owners do in their first week. That’s right, at We Dared To Dream (WDTD) we don’t talk months and years. We talk about days and weeks. We want you to be earning money quickly.
1) Find time
We meet people all the time who are already worrying about their business after launch. DON’T. Take measured steps and have a plan.
Step one is simple – make a commitment to your self that you’re going to spend X hours per week developing your idea and plans. Even identify the time of day you’ll do it. We’re going to make starting your business a fun project with no major expenses and no risk! You’ll have set aside X hours and you’re going to have fun doing this. OK?
2) Sort out your personal finances
It amazes me how many people don’t do this before they start their business.
Spend some time to understand your monthly income and expenditure. Break down the expenditure into areas and look at what you need versus what you like. On WDTD we’ll help you save cash each month. You can then use this on your new toy – “YOUR BUSINESS”.
Once you’ve looked at your monthly numbers it’s time to look at your bank balances and other liquid assets (liquid means things you can easily convert to cash). You’ll quickly know how much money you have and can afford on your business.
3) Risk management
This sounds scary but it’s actually quite easy. Your number one risk when starting a business is going broke through bad decisions. We help you take smart decisions and reduce your risk.
The first smart decision is that you’re going to do the setup of your business while you still have your existing job (assuming you have one!). You won’t be giving up that job (revenue stream) any time soon.
The second smart decision is one you’ve already taken. You’re going to look at your finances and get a clear view on your monthly situation and your assets. You’ll keep these in mind as you move forwards. We hate the unknown and that’s one unknown you don’t need!
4) Personal goals
This is the Dared to Dream part and it’s also really fun.
Spend ten minutes and make a list of all the stuff you don’t like about your current work life. It can be anything. We’ll show you our lists on the WDTD site.
Now spend ten minutes dreaming about what you want your life to be like. think about travel, time for family, salary you want to earn, toys you’d like to have. Go on dream a bit.
Now you’ve got a list of the personal goals that are important to you. We’ll be using them more when we get to your business plan.
It’s amazing how once you break stuff down into small parts it suddenly seems easier and things start happening really quickly.
and here’s the 5th step
5) Make a weekly plan
This is where is gets trickier. Most of our members have an idea of the business they want to start. For some we help them find a business idea that works for their needs and experience.
You know how much time you’re going to spend each week because you did that in step 1. Now you’ll make a list of things you will do each week in that time.
When it’s broken down into easy to follow steps, it’s just so much easier to follow, not make mistakes and be successful. You’ll be amazed just how quickly you more towards the launch of your money making business.
Phew! was that so hard? In 5 steps and 5 days you’ve mapped out your path to success.
Let me tell you a secret
Work step by step. Complete the first step, get it right and move on to the next. That’s our approach at WDTD. It makes everything easier and before you know it, you’ll be launched and making money!
Be successful
Rob

I showed this to my friend who’s been pushing me to get organized and do exactly some of the things you said. He says I’m not that organized.
I am great with people and very good at sales. Are organizational skills crucial if I want to be successful? Thanks
Dave
Organization skills are important. The great news for you is that there are many things you can do and tools that you can use that will really help you.
This is a skill that can quite quickly be developed. So don’t worry.
My guess is that if you’re good at sales you must have some form of sales management tool (often called CRM) or technique…. So there’s hope for you.
The coaching Club has this area well covered.

Weekly plans work well for me. If I do one big list I get depressed because I’m having no quick wins. Thanks
I’m starting a staging business and your personal goals thing was really cool. I did it last night and stuck them on my fridge. Makes me smile every time I see them. Thx
Hello again Lorrie,
We have our lists pinned to our wall all these years later. It still makes us smile. Glad it worked for you!
Rob
I’m starting an at home business in admin support and it’s funny to read this. It’s so true and so many people I know could use getting a plan or organized.
Blaze here.
Nice tips and great see you reply Rob.
I’m going to try and plan my personal spending which was not good in 2009 :-(
